The brain myth: We Use Only 10% of our Brain

Ever wonder the possibility of the above statement to be true?

Debate goes on that “we use only 10% of our brain” is a myth and a random figure thrown out. The way I see it: no doubt we use 100% of our brain (consciously and unconsciously combined), what’s more important is we use just 10% of our true potential by having limited thinking.

“The most common reason people don’t overcome the odds is that they don’t challenge them enough.”
– John C Maxwell

You may ask: so how do we increase the capacity of our minds? What we were taught to believe is that growing and expanding our potential means doing more work. That’s actually not the case. Hard work isn’t always the answer.

Instead, do a self-assessment with the following question:

  • What do I want/ need?

  • Why do I have this desire?

  • How badly do I want it?

  • What is required of me?

  • How can I achieve this and get the greatest achievement? (It is not about how much money, time or effort you spend, but what accelerates your growth, what truly moves the needle that matters)

Here’s the key question to unlocking your potential, ask:
How can I …?

The default question we go to is “can I? is this possible for me?” Yet all change happens first in the mind. In asking the question “how can I …?”, you open up the field of possibility. Asking “how can I …?” helps you explore innovative and creative ways to achieve greater things.

“Your doubts (of yourself) are not the product of accurate thinking, but habitual thinking.”
- Price Pritchett

The greatest challenge you’ll face is looking into the eye of change, and choosing to expand your mind. Like in the Disney movie Frozen 2 (no spoilers!!), Elsa faced a huge dilemma struggling to block out her inner voice to maintain the peace that has been restored in kingdom Arendelle. She was afraid of getting judged for following her north star but has the silent and strong desire of wanting to know what’s more for her.

Changing your mindset is the first step to immense improvement in life. The next step to expanding your potential is changing the actions you take daily. Changing your thinking and your actions will dictate the change in your outcome.

Will you continue doing what you have done to go to where you want to go? Wanting more means wanting change and change exists beyond our comfort zones. Doing new things, doing things differently leads to new discoveries and this brings you to a different level of awareness, skillsets, ability and ambition to grow and expand your potential.

Instead of doing the important things on important days, choose to do the important things daily.

One last quote (I promise!):

“Learning is discovering that something is possible.”
- Fritz Perls
