Ending the Year with Wellness

To start the new year on the right note we have to review and reflect on the current year. Do an inventory of how this year went and be intentional about how the new year will feel to us. Will the new year be the same-old-same-old or will it FINALLY be the year we plan and get committed to goals that our heart really jumps with joy for?

Here are my top 5 tips to end your year well and plan for a fantastic year ahead!

1. Self-Assessment

Measure yourself on a scale from 1-10, 1 being least satisfied and 10 being most satisfied, how fulfilled are you and how great was your experience in each of this areas –

  • Emotional wellbeing

  • Personal pursuits (sense of meaning and purpose in life)

  • Connectedness (relationship with family & friends)

  • Level of satisfaction in life experiences

  • Health and physical wellness

  • Inspiration/ spirituality

  • How much are you growing (learning new stuff)

2. Release & Let Go

As we grow with life, we grow out of old programming and old systems. What old projects or ties with people are you holding on to that are no longer serving your emotional wellbeing? What ideas, habits have you outgrown that are no longer necessary for this new phase of life you’re stepping into?

Who are the people who taught you patience and forgiveness, are you ready to let them go?

Are there connections with certain people who you’ll want to strengthen on? How can you engage with them in deeper, more meaningful conversations to grow together?

3. Form New Connections

Have you been wanting to join a new community of like-minded individuals? Expanding your network and meeting new people brings you a different perspective, making friends with people from all walks of life widens your horizons. When was the last time you made new friends? Hopefully, it’s not during school days when you had to make new friends or you’ll be the odd one out. What qualities in a friend would you love to have? Embody these qualities yourself and you’ll soon find yourself drawn towards these people.

4. Plan New Experiences

How would you keep up with your self-care routine? Is this getting more consistent to the days you treat yourself or does this sound like you trying out new hobbies for the fun of it?

What new learnings/ experiences are you looking forward to in the coming year? Just like how we have classes and a fixed curriculum planned out for us during our schooling years, we can now set our curriculum based on our own preferences.

Having a list of items (be it a new hobby or new skills) that I want to learn, has kept me motivated to view the year and even each month and day positively despite the current situations in our world. It’s always a wonderful feeling to remember that now I have control and choice over what I want to learn because they light me up and I know I’ll have no feelings of regrets or guilt when I’m much older. Because I gave myself a chance to try it out anyway.

*Reminder: With new projects, it’s easy to want to take on many responsibilities and have enormous to-dos, allow yourself to work with reasonable timeframes for how these projects will come to fruition. You want it to be a fun walk in the park, not a stressful sprinting competition. You are not comparing yourself to anyone. It’s your unique journey.

5. Visualize Your Ideal Day

Visualize a day in your life where you feel a sense of ease. What conditions brought to this feeling? What restrains are no longer present in this setting? How different is it that you get to have a nice day to yourself? Does this look like a day of journaling, a day of playing and fooling around with your pet, or does this day look like a meaningful heart-to-heart conversation with your family/ partner?

How do you want life to be? What will you do to make this day possible? How will you create life such that you experience more of these days?

Work out a plan around the kind of lifestyle you’ll want to experience.
