Communication Tips - Relationship Edition
Disclaimer: while this blog addresses relationships involving a man and a woman, it applies across all types of relationships. The terms “man” and “woman” used in this blog can refer to the traits you are more prone to display i.e. masculine or feminine traits.
💭 Ever wonder what is the most frequent complaint women and men have of each other?
Team Ladies: they (men) don’t ever listen!
Team Gentlemen: they (women) remind me of my mom - constantly nagging!
As mentioned in the previous blog, men and women have different ways of thinking, and behaving. Place them in a romantic relationship and you’ll soon see disagreements surface, or conflicts arise.
In this blog I'm going to shed light on:
some of the major trigger statements each gender unintentionally shared with the other
what is being interpreted when the opposite gender hears and
what to say instead so you end up understanding each other better!
Trigger statements from the ladies
Trigger statement 1: Nothing is working 💀
What he hears: You never help out, you never do anything right. I cannot trust you.
Improved statement: I feel overwhelmed today. Thank you for being by my side even on a challenging day like this. Nothing seems to work well for me today. Would you tell me that I'm doing a great job? That will make me feel 100x better. ✅
Trigger statement 2: You don’t love me anymore 💀
What he hears: I have given you my all, but you have given me nothing. I’m a fool for loving you.
Improved statement: I feel as though you don’t love me although I know that is not true. I'm just feeling a little insecure right now, could you reassure me by reminding me that you love me? It feels good to know that I am loved by you. ✅
Trigger statements from the gentlemen
Trigger statement 1: It’s no big deal 💀
What she hears: Stop overreacting. You’re making a big deal out of nothing.
Improved statement: Please don’t worry about it. I can deal with this and make things work. I’m happy to solve this issue, trust me alright. ✅
Trigger statement 2: I’m fine 💀
What she hears: I don't care. It is not my problem.
Improved statement: Thank you for showing your concern but I can manage this. I’ll ask if I need help. I am able to handle this problem. ✅
How each gender deal with issues:
Women: talk to get more information/ support/ reassurance
Men: solve the issues themselves
Understanding how we function and are wired to behave can prevent a problem from escalating further as well as increase intimacy and trust in a relationship.
Remember to use the improved statements the next time you find yourself on the verge of using the trigger statements and see how differently your partner reacts.
Is miscommunication a common threat in your relationship? What other trigger statements do you often observe coming up in your close relationships? Share them in the comments. Have you overcome certain trigger statements in your relationships? If so, share what worked for you too in the comments section. You might just help another person out in their relationship!
It blows my mind how amazing my clients are at teaching me more about relationships the more I work with them. If you too are seeking a therapist to help you unravel the mystery as to why a certain behaviour from your partner ticks you off, seeking professional help may just be the solution to a peaceful and loving relationship. For a deeper dive, check out and send in your application so we can work together in a 1:1 Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) session. RTT can help you understand and overcome unhelpful, critical thought patterns that contribute to overall stress which strains a relationship.
By communicating directly with your subconscious mind, you can discover what’s truly affecting your relationship and empower yourself to choose different thoughts and actions therein change your outcome for the better!
