Benefits of Therapy: How It Can Transform Your Life
Growing up, many of us were taught that internal struggles should be kept under wraps, hidden away like some shameful secret. 🤐 But here's the truth: sweeping your emotions under the rug is the worst thing you can do for yourself. Ignoring psychological issues, especially past traumas, can lead to a myriad of problems down the road.
One powerful tool for managing our mental health, regardless of the hurdles life throws our way is therapy. We all encounter unexpected challenges and longstanding issues that can impact our mental health. Whether it's navigating a major life change, coping with stress at work, or dealing with past traumas, therapy provides a safe space to explore our thoughts and emotions.
Wondering how therapy can work wonders for your mental health? Let's unpack the ways therapy can truly make a difference.
In therapy, we unearth parts of ourselves that might have been suppressed or neglected, giving voice to our deepest needs. By acknowledging these hidden aspects, we pave the way for healing and self-discovery. ❤️🩹 As we confront suppressed emotions and thoughts, we learn to be gentle with ourselves, fostering a nurturing environment for growth.
We get to learn coping skills and strategies to manage the stresses of life and become resilient. We get to perform at a healthier mental state and this increases our growth and productivity to do more of the things we want instead of worrying about the physical symptoms which will manifest itself at inappropriate times e.g. if a panic attack will strike us at the workplace or when we are with our loved ones.
Want to know how you can truly make the most out of therapy? Here are some effective tips that can help you maximize your therapy experience.
Trust in the process 🕰️
healing takes time and you have to participate in the process. Therapy works just as much as you’re involved in healing, your therapist alone can’t help if you’re not willing to show up for the therapy and allow change to happen. Change is not scary, talking to someone about your problem is unfamiliar. When you take the first step towards booking a session you’re taking a huge step towards committing to your healing. One step at a time. We will get there together.
Be kind to yourself 🧘♀️
as much as we want to quickly heal and recover, we have to attend therapy with a mindset of openness, curiosity to learn more about ourselves and not be judgmental about what is being brought to the surface during a therapy session. Attending a therapy session is not a to-do list item, it’s a process of healing, a process of recovery and a journey back to YOU. Extend grace, kindness and empathy to yourself as you’re receiving therapy sessions. On some days you’ll feel like you’re on cloud nine, on other days the sky seems to be crashing down. These are part and parcel of the therapeutic journey. Have resilience and patience, you will get to a place of acceptance and understanding.
Ask lots of questions🙋♀️
and share with your therapist what you want to get out of the session. Your session can benefit you so much as when your therapist gets information from you about what you wish to achieve and receives total transparency of your emotional, and mental experience of an event that has caused you hurt. Too much information is allowed!
The stigma surrounding mental health can create barriers, preventing many from reaching out for the support they need. Here are some tips to help break down the barriers and overcome the fear or stigma associated with therapy.
Know that you’re not alone 👯♀️
statistics from the World Health Organization have shown that approximately 1 in 4 people will develop mental illness at some point in their lives. And statistics from the Mental Health Association share that 57.2% of individuals struggling with mental health problems did not obtain treatment. That’s more than half the population! Surely, we can do better than this.
When you seek therapy, you give others a chance to see that healing is possible for them 💞(this is one of my favourite part about therapy)
many people surprisingly starts to open up to their feelings when realizing that another peer or family member is seeking help for mental health. There is an increasing trend and need for individuals to seek help due to the stress we and the society put ourselves through constantly. When you are ok with seeking help, you become a role model for others to take care of themselves. We can together lift the stigma towards therapy.
Change your perception 💭
seeing a therapist for your mental health is similar to seeing a doctor when you’ve got a fever or flu symptom, it is also similar to seeking an oncologist when needing medical care for cancer. Pretending you don’t need help doesn’t cause the symptoms to go away. Attending them can speed up the process of healing and feeling good again.
