Quitting the right things, at the right time

old ways don't open new doors

Imagine for a second, you’re in the fifth year of your stable job. It’s decent workload, your colleagues are nice to you, and you have a steady stream of income. But.. you’re feeling tired, losing passion, you feel you’ve stopped growing and you crave for more… you want something different.

Is it ok to quit then?

Like nature, leaves fall off trees when the seasons change. If a tree were to hold onto its leaves, it’s not likely for the tree to thrive.

Seasons change, and so do our inclinations and desires change.

What we have to change is our mindset towards quitting.

Quitting what’s difficult and tough but assures you growth is not what I’ll recommend.

Quitting what’s stagnant, mundane and no longer serving your greatest growth is totally ok and a part of life.

In order to grow, you have to put what you care about as a priority, before other’s agendas come before yours.

Sunk cost effect

There are aspects of life – your dreams, aspirations, goals, wishes that withers when you hold onto things on the past for too long because your brain is tricked into thinking that you need to keep pouring time, energy and effort into the areas that no longer serve you.

You think it’s your fault for wanting to quit, that you’re a quitter – but the truth is, you’re ready for more.

4 signs it’s time for you to quit

1. You feel you’re going with the motion

You’re doing the same old thing every day, you want to experience more of life but you feel trapped in a constant cycle of working like a zombie, and not feeling fulfilled at the end of the day.

2. You’re spending more time fixing the situation than enjoying

Do you feel that a certain relationship has reached its expiry date? Perhaps your heart is nudging you to not try so hard maintaining contact with a certain friend given that they hadn’t shown up as much for you. Perhaps it’s a commitment you’ve had towards an organization, that you’re helping to fix what’s broken within the system but the person in charge is not putting in the same effort to resolve the issue.

3. You’ve lost direction, desire and zest for life

You missed the old you – the you who wakes up in the morning excited to meet your partner after work, the you who enjoys socializing with the colleagues in your company, the you who gets all nerdy and studies chunks of data to improve a software or system at your workplace.

4. You feel somewhere somehow something’s off

Are you dreading attending an event? Do you feel you get anxious when you’re doing something you feel is not a right fit for you? Or maybe you’ve noticed yourself getting sick more often than usual when a certain situation happens. These are signs and signals from your body, and subconscious mind telling you that something’s off and you need to address it.

4 ways to set yourself up for success towards the new that’s coming your way

1. Make a list of what you want

Turn up some happy music, forget about your obligations for awhile and write away – what sets your soul on fire? What gets you excited and smiling just by thinking about it? There’re no limitations here, write away.

2. Make a list of what you no longer want

What are some people, things, and situations that’s been draining your energy for the past 6 months? It’s time to take inventory on that. When we know what no longer serves us, we begin the first step to creating a happier life.

3. Create a plan towards letting go the old and stepping into the new

How can you responsibly let go of the things in life which no longer serves you? Which items can you complete with integrity and leave for good, which items can you pass on to another team member? Is it time to make room for the new – does this mean you’ll have to announce you’re leaving so others have time to assist your exit and celebrate your new journey?

4. Set up mini deadlines

As you break down these small goals of letting go of the old so you have space, time and room for the new, you’ll need to set some deadlines. Pick a date and time for your mini deadlines for each goal, write them down on a calendar or a post it and have them visible to you every day – this serves as a reminder and an exciting countdown timer for your new adventure ahead!
