Discarding Old Habits, Building Stronger, Lasting Habits
Everyone can teach themselves a new habit. The key is to make these habits stick and the way to do so is to make the habit desirable to you. One rule of the mind is that it moves us towards pleasure and away from pain.
Wanting to “lose weight” sends a signal to your mind that you are losing a part of you, that you need to control yourself from indulging in food that makes you happy, and you have to stick to a gym routine which sounds torturous to your mind.
Think this instead: “I’m excited and thrilled to shed excess weight.” The difference in this second statement is that you’re teaching your mind to picture the future, to envision yourself in a physical state where you’re fit and happy.
What is important is to associate your mind to the benefits of staying slim instead of thinking about the things you want to have but can’t have – e.g not being able to have that fried chicken on New Year’s Day.
As you reassess last year and set new resolutions for the year, ask yourself “who do I want to be?”
Have a new habit you’ll like to incorporate?
Do this:
Imagine a vivid picture
Feel the feeling of succeeding in the new habit
Visualize the action plan for the habit to stay in place
Bring to mind the positive comments people will say when you start practicing this new habit
Envision how differently you will act and feel
Repeat this exercise daily
When you change a habit of thought you change the habit of action.
We are all motivated by the emotions we feel. Logically telling yourselves to lose weight will not get you to exercise more, or be deliberate in eating certain ‘health’ foods.
Instead feel the joy when you finish a HIIT workout, choose a green smoothie over a bag of chips, really immersing yourself in the feeling of achievement when you see the number on your weighing scale go down influences your mind to stick through the new habit so much more.
What we think more of becomes our reality.
When we constantly think about the things we don’t want - the struggle of fitting into clothes, sweating and feeling tired during an exercise, we will feel the undesired feelings because our focus and attention is on it.
When you switch your focus on the benefits - a toned body, envious looks from your colleagues, feeling healthy and proud for having a salad over fried chicken, you stay committed to your habit.
Struggling to create a better habit in a different life area? Here’s a guide to the statements, and thoughts you can choose to use today to change the way you think about a habit. It doesn’t have to be difficult and it can be easy.
What about breaking old habits? What's the best way to replace unhelpful habits with more helpful ones?
So glad you’ve asked. The opposite of love is not hatred, it is indifference. If you’re addicted to social media, to alcohol or overworking into the late nights, the last thing you want to do is “force yourself” to stop the bad habit.
Instead, look at the ways it is harming you.
If you were to keep this habit with you:
What would your life look like 5 years from now?
Is this the kind of life you want to live?
Simply deciding to be willing to let go of an old habit can cause a huge shift. When you’re done with an old habit, and begin the search for replacement habits, you bring yourself closer to the kind of lifestyle you seek.
Think:
How do I want to feel about myself 5 years from now?
What will get me there?
When you continuously practice your new habits, the neural pathway to old habits will die out and the neural pathway to new habits will strengthen. This gets easier with time and repetition.
Want to work with a professional?
With the help of RTT (Rapid Transformational Therapy), you can work with your subconscious mind to go straight to the root reason why you had a bad habit in the first place, extract the bad habit and install positive new habits, ultimately changing the way you show up for yourself.
Did you know that RTT uses the best methods of hypnotherapy and hypnosis is effective in causing change in the subconscious mind? What’s mindblowing is that our subconscious mind controls up to 90% of our functioning!
When we change our mindset and habits at the subconscious level we don’t need conscious effort or hard work to constantly seek to motivate ourselves to build helpful habits.
