Are perceptive people a dying breed?

Ever wonder why some people are so adamant on their beliefs about the world? Chances are, we (you and I) too have our stubborn sides and will jump to defend certain beliefs of ours when threatened. 🫣

Why is this so?

Our education, upbringing and past experiences with the world shape our reality. This makes decision making easier and with repeated feedback from the environment, we form our beliefs about the world.

For example:

So … how do we be more open-minded?

There are practical and effective ways to change the way you see the world and this can help open doors to more opportunities, connection with others and experiences.

1. Be willing to see things differently

Sounds simple, but often than not we’re the first ones to pull back when we feel discomfort of the unknown. The brain is wired in a way that we move towards what is familiar and veer away from what is unfamiliar. The first step to being more open-minded and allowing opportunities to come your way is to be willing.

Affirmation: I am willing to be willing

2. Meditation

You might be asking “how does meditation help with changing my perspective?” Meditation, a practice done by many indigenous societies and now introduced to mainstream Western culture helps us calm the mind. Meditation allows us to pull away from the distractions around us and to make the conscious decision on focusing our attention on a specific thought. Not only does it calm the mind, it also allows us to be open to new ideas. This can open the door to creative ways to solve a problem or to gain new insights.

“Wisdom runs through calm inaction, desireless waiting” - Lao Tzu

3. Eavesdrop your inner dialogue

How much time in a day do you spend listening to the dialogue in your mind? Darting from one task to another throughout the day, we often lose sight of the conversations we have in our mind. Are we repeating a thought that had ceased to exist in the current moment (e.g. a remark someone gave about your submission 3 days ago), or are we flooded with judgmental thoughts of a person for something that had happened 2 hours ago?

What to do when you find yourself in such situations?

  1. Catch your thoughts

  2. Jot them down

  3. Identify the bias involved in those thoughts

  4. Find a substitute thought that is less emotional and more logical

This will make you a less judgmental person, and help you be open to seeing things differently ultimately making you more open-minded.
