What everyone should know about Imposter Syndrome
Let’s talk about imposter syndrome. It’s real – from everyday individuals like you and me to individuals of huge fame such as the well-known actress Natalie Portman to former first lady of United States Michelle Obama to successful author and businesswoman Arianna Huffington – we all experience it.
It is NORMAL.
We begin life with nothing: zero experience, no knowledge and unafraid of making mistakes but as we grow, get education, and experience life we learn. We become wiser and we start to feel afraid – for not being good enough to be the person we are.
Whether you feel like a “fluke” and “fake” or a “fraud” – there’re years of experience in the making of who you are today.
The constant fear that someone would discover that you don’t know what you’re doing with your life is UNIVERSAL, everyone has the same fear because we don’t have everything figured out but we feel alone in experiencing imposter syndrome because we don’t speak enough about it.
When you see yourself through a flawed lens, thinking you aren’t good enough, you lead yourself to sabotage your own success in career, and relationships.
The key question: am I good enough? can serve as a motivation for us to continuously be ambitious with our goals and to stay persistent, committed to them without causing us to doubt our abilities, talents and character.
Self-doubt is common, it is felt by high school students, it is also felt by authors who have published over 10 books, it doesn’t disappear with any level of success. Every time it comes down to the same feeling “someone is going to find out the truth about me”.
We are born good, yet we are groomed to believe that being truly ourselves means showing our evilness, cursing bad words every second and being greedy. But that’s not the case. You measure up, you are worthy of the success you’ve earned for yourself – whether you’re the best dancer in class, the fastest novel-book-reader or the top performer in your industry – you matter.
Instead of thinking you have to fight the voice in your head that questions if you are good enough, use this 2 questions to guide yourself towards seeing yourself in a healthier light:
1. How good am I at …?
2. How can I improve myself when doing …?
Question 1 helps you acknowledge your strengths because it is based on facts about you. Question 2 guides you to seek growth, direction and assistance without feeling like you’re clueless about what you’re doing.
Trust me – the highest rank of people often don’t feel qualified for their position, but they show up anyway.
The world needs you, you don’t have to be ready, but you have to trust the reason you’re here.
