How being Adaptable Improves your Mental Health
Struggling with change?
Being adaptable means choosing to be resilient. Change is inevitable, and transitions in life are bound to happen. When you accept change and embrace the messy parts of figuring out your life you grow to be more responsive to the demands of life and you become a better version of yourself. You progress and expand.
When someone is unable to change, they may feel they’ve lacked behind others, they might feel life has nothing else to offer them or may feel resentment for the positive changes happening in other’s life. They might also begin to feel different from their peers, and may feel they are not good enough to get the things they want in life.
Instead of getting stuck in the rut and feeling upset about the stagnation or lack of purpose in life, when you choose to be adaptable, you challenge the limiting beliefs you have of yourself and you feel alive for choosing to pursue something greater than you.
This can look like you’re:
choosing to follow your passion and switch to a career you’re passionate about
being a role model to your children by changing your parenting style to the traditional “authoritarian”
choosing to be respectful of the opinions of others instead of dismissing another’s point of view
deciding to be kinder to yourself and cheer yourself on even if you’re once a perfectionist
outgrowing a friend group and seeking out new friendships that encourage your growth
stopping the addictive habits that are affecting your physical health
picking up your track shoes and committing to exercising
Whichever decision you make, if it feels aligned with the person you want to be 5 years from now, even if there’s slight resistance – know that you are capable of great things and you are limitless. It’s time to adapt to new changes and make a new positive lifestyle familiar to you.
Here are 3 actions you can take today to make adaptability your new strength:
Doing something new frequently
Perhaps it’s picking up a new hobby or changing up your commuting routine, or even hanging out with a different group of friends.
Have a positive mindset towards change
We often feel change is something foreign and uncomfortable, however it’s when we push ourselves to the zone of discomfort and into the unknown that we grow and learn about ourselves the most.
Surround yourself with uplifting people
If you’re constantly hanging out with people who dislike change, who prefer to stay in their comfort zone or who complain about their current situation but do not make an effort to improve, then you’re likely to follow along their path.
As the saying goes, you’re the average of the 5 people you surround yourself with, be choosy about your company because they will ultimately affect your outlook on life and your relationship with yourself.
